SEER2, MERV and R32: What the Numbers on Your HVAC Quote Actually Mean
Three sets of letters and numbers show up on almost every HVAC quote, and knowing what each one measures is the difference between an honest comparison and a guess.

Anyone who has collected more than one HVAC quote has run into a wall of letters and numbers that all sound important and mostly go unexplained. SEER2, MERV, R32, tier names like Value or Premier. None of it is complicated once someone breaks it down, and understanding it is the difference between comparing two proposals honestly and just picking whichever one has the lower price on the page.
SEER2: How Efficiently The System Uses Electricity
SEER2 measures how much cooling a system delivers for the electricity it uses over a season, and a higher number means the system is squeezing more comfort out of the same amount of power. It replaced the older SEER rating with a more realistic testing method, so a SEER2 number and an old SEER number are not directly comparable even if they look similar. When comparing two quotes, make sure both are actually listing SEER2 and not mixing an old rating with a new one, since that alone can make one option look better than it really is.
Why A Higher Number Is Not Automatically The Right Answer
A higher SEER2 rating generally means lower running costs over time, but it also usually means a more complex, more expensive system, often with variable-speed components instead of a simple single-speed motor. The right choice depends on the specific house, how it is used, and how long the homeowner plans to stay in it, not just on chasing the highest number on the sheet. MERV: What The Filter Is Actually Catching
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and it measures how well a filter captures particles out of the air passing through it. A low MERV filter catches larger particles like dust and lint. A higher MERV filter catches progressively smaller particles, which matters more for households dealing with allergies, pets, or general air quality concerns, and it matters more than usual in a humid climate where fine particles have an easier time carrying mold spores and pollen through a home. The tradeoff is that a denser, higher-MERV filter restricts airflow more than a basic one, so the rest of the system, the ductwork and the blower, needs to be able to handle it. That is one more reason equipment tiers usually pair a specific filter rating with the rest of the system rather than treating the filter as an accessory bolted on afterward.
R32: The Refrigerant Doing The Actual Work
R32 is the refrigerant, the fluid that actually carries heat out of the house and releases it outside. Refrigerants have shifted over the years toward options with a lower environmental impact, and R32 is part of that shift, generally regarded as more efficient at transferring heat and lower impact than older refrigerants it is replacing across the industry. Comparing Two Quotes Honestly
- Confirm both quotes list SEER2, not a mix of SEER2 and the older SEER rating
- Check what MERV rating the included filter actually is, not just that a filter is included
- Ask what refrigerant the system uses and whether the coil and condenser are matched for it
- Compare warranty length on parts and on labor separately, since they are not always the same number
- Ask what specifically changes between tiers, not just the price difference between them
None of these numbers exist to make a quote sound impressive. Each one describes something real about how the system will perform, how clean the air will be, and what it will cost to run over the years you own it. Once you know what each one actually measures, two quotes stop looking like a guessing game and start looking like an actual comparison.
